“Hey, Relax.” The Fine Balance Between Action and Restoration.

Lately, I have been feeling very tired, regardless of the amount of sleep I’ve gotten.

I still wake up, work out, meditate, and do the things I love that leave me energized, but I can’t seem to shake this haze.

I’ve spent much of my life rushing around and trying to take on more than I can handle, consistently burning myself out and stressing my nervous system more than it can comfortably handle.

Those days are gone. I have been following my intuition in all aspects of life. From diet, to exercise, the people I surround myself with, and: the balance between action and rest.

We are raised in a world that thinks we should be go-go-go 24/7. “Sleep is for the weak” and “that’s why God gave us coffee.” We are constantly marketed stimulants, and consequently, products to counteract the damage these stimulants are doing to us.

When will we learn as a society that at times we are simply meant to rest? All over the world, countries have times, from siestas to sabbaticals, to honor the fact that we need periods of resting after striving.

We work hard for vacation days, then pack our vacations with energy-spending adventures and excitement. Rarely do we sit and do nothing.

The lifestyle prominent in our culture completely ignores the laws of nature. A classic example is that of moon phases. It is currently going into a New Moon right now, which could explain part of why I am tired for seemingly no reason. During the waning and new moon, we are encouraged to slow down, reflect, and cleanse ourselves of unnecessary weight, activities, and emotional burdens. It is a natural time of rest and reflection. Even the birds,I have noticed, become quieter in their music-making during these times.

It is not being lazy or selfish to take time for yourself and relax. It is a basic, even primal, act of self care. It is foundational to our ability to work hard and maintain adequate energy for executing tasks. When we rest, we RESTore our energy stores. This way, we are ready for action when it truly counts.

How many times have you cancelled plans you were excited for because you just didn’t have the energy for it? Imagine how things could have been different if you made rest and relaxation a part of your everyday lifestyle.

I’m not suggesting you abandon your work and spend the rest of your days bird-watching, though it makes an enriching past time.

I am simply encouraging you to make time out of your days to do what leaves you feeling refreshed afterwards. Honor how your body feels, and don’t push yourself too hard. Allow your body to work through whatever it is working through so that you don’t have to always feel burnt out.

Things you can do to relax and conserve energy include:

  • Meditation, Tai Chi, and Yoga
  • Slow walks in Nature
  • Coloring Books and Painting
  • Reading an easy book and simple Poetry
  • Making more meals in a slow cooker and planning food prep days
  • Cuddling with a pet or loved one
  • Bird and nature watching
  • Breathing exercises, such as Pranayama
  • Aromatherapy with essential oils such as lavender, patchouli, clary sage, orange, frankincense and ylang ylang
  • Listening to calming music
  • Day dreaming
  • Mindfully drinking tea
  • Having a self care day, with face masks and magnesium foot baths
  • Take a nap
  • Simply doing nothing.
